Joe Bower, Jack Fletcher and Alex Smalley
from Bradfield School won the Boys Y7 Team competition in the British
Schools Championships held in the Wyre Forest in Bewdley. They were
racing against tough competition from High Schools, Sports Colleges,
Grammer and Independent Schools across the UK but came through to win
the age group competition. This was the culmination of 18 months
work for the three of them.
They all started orienteering as part of a
development project which sought to develop orienteering in Sheffield
Schools. Their junior schools, Bradfield Dungworth, Oughtibridge and
Wharncliffe Side had been mapped for orienteering and teachers from
their schools had been trained to introduce the sport. Joe, Jack and
Alex had represented their junior schools in an inter school
competition then many of the childrens parents had taken them to events
organised by the local club South Yorkshire Orienteer's.
